Do you have to have insurance on a boat in Florida?
This question is asked frequently, and the answer is yes. Every boat owner in Florida must have insurance for their vessel. The amount of coverage you need will vary depending on your state requirements. Each state has its own minimum limits that are required to be insured by law in the event of a boating accident or incident that causes damage to other vessels or damage to personal property, such as swim platforms and docks. These limits will also vary depending on the type of vessel you have.

The following covers basic boat damage claims that are covered by insurance:
- Damage to your vessel caused by collision, fire, vandalism, sinking or stranding. This is the most common type of claim for boating accidents. If you collide with another vessel and cause injury to its passengers or damage to their property (dock, swim platform, etc.), your insurance will cover these damages under collision coverage. This same policy also applies if you collide with any other object, such as a buoy or jetty, and damage the boat.
- Damage caused by windstorm and hail is covered under comprehensive insurance protection. For example, if your vessel becomes damaged due to a storm that causes broken windows or damaged equipment on the boat.
- If you lose your boat and it is later found, your insurance will cover any damages to the vessel caused by theft under the comprehensive policy. – Damage caused by iceberg damage can be covered if you have iceberg coverage. This type of coverage is usually only offered in certain states and applies only to vessels that have been equipped to sail in higher latitudes.
- If the boat is rendered a complete loss, as determined by your insurance company, your vessel can be covered under total loss protection if you have this type of coverage.
Many states have additional local requirements that must also be met prior to being able to operate a vessel. It is important to know and understand all state and local laws in order to avoid fines or other penalties.
